A fractional CFO costs between $3,000 and $25,000 a month. That is a wide band, and the thing that decides where you land in it is not the CFO. It is you: your revenue stage, the hours you need, and whether you want a former startup CFO or a former Big Four partner.

This guide gives the rates by stage and by provider, extends the same data to fractional CIOs, CTOs, COOs and CHROs, sets it against the all-in cost of a full-time hire, and then does the thing most fractional-CFO guides avoid: it tells you when the model is the wrong purchase.

Fractional CFO cost by company stage

Fractional Pulse’s dataset, the largest public one we can find, breaks fractional CFO engagements down by the company’s stage. The retainer, the hours behind it and the implied hourly rate all rise together.

Company stageMonthly retainerHours a monthHourly rate
Pre-revenue or seed$3,000–$6,00010–15$250–$400
Series A ($1M–$5M ARR)$7,000–$12,00015–25$300–$480
Series B ($5M–$20M ARR)$10,000–$18,00020–30$350–$600
Growth ($20M+ ARR)$15,000–$25,00025–40$375–$625

CFO Advisors, a fractional CFO firm that published its own observations from about 100 venture-backed clients in August 2026, uses finer stage bands and lands in the same place, with a lower floor for the very earliest companies:

StageHourly rateHours a monthMonthly budgetWhat the work is

Two things jump out. The hours are the real variable: a Series B company is not paying a much higher hourly rate than a seed company, it is buying three times as many hours. And the top of the range, $25,000 to $35,000 a month, is 50 to 80 hours a month, which is a two-day-a-week executive. At that point you are close to a part-time hire and should price it as one.

Fractional CFO cost by type of provider

The other axis is who you buy from. CFO Advisors’ observed hourly rates by provider type:

Provider typeHourly rateTypical background
Marketplace or staffing platform$125–$225Controller or VP finance
Solo fractional CFO$200–$350Former startup CFO or VP finance
Boutique fractional CFO firm$250–$450Ex-operating CFOs with team support
National platform (bookkeeping-led)$250–$400CPA-heavy, accounting first
Big Four or investment bank independent$350–$500Transaction and audit background

The cheapest tier is often not a CFO at all. A $125-an-hour “fractional CFO” from a staffing marketplace is usually a controller, which is fine if what you need is closed books and a cash forecast, and not fine if you are raising a Series B. Match the background to the job: a former operating CFO for planning and fundraising, a transaction specialist for a sale, an accounting-led platform for compliance and close.

Fractional CIO and CTO cost

The same model has spread to technology leadership, and the rates are higher, because the alternative (a full-time CTO with equity) is more expensive.

Fractional CTO, by stageMonthly retainerHours a monthHourly rate
Pre-product or MVP$5,000–$10,00010–20$350–$500
Post-launch ($1M–$5M ARR)$8,000–$15,00015–25$400–$600
Scale ($5M+ ARR)$12,000–$22,00020–35$400–$630

Fractional CIO listings are thinner, and the UK contract market shows why. In the six months to September 2026, IT Jobs Watch recorded a £625 median day rate for a contract CTO from 17 quoted rates (down 30.6% on a year earlier, on a small sample) and no quoted rates at all for a contract CIO. Interim and fractional CIO work exists, but it is bought through networks and interim providers rather than advertised, and the few contract CIO rates the same source recorded in its two earlier annual windows had medians of £900 and £1,363, on samples of three and two. Treat those as anecdotes, and expect to pay like a Big Four programme lead.

A fractional CTO makes sense when you have engineers and no one to decide what they build, or when you need a credible technical voice for a fundraise or a due diligence. It makes less sense once the engineering team passes 15 to 20 people, when the management load becomes a full-time job.

Fractional COO, CHRO and CISO cost

The remaining roles, from the same Fractional Pulse dataset:

RoleMonthly retainerHours a monthHourly rate
Fractional COO, 10–30 employees$5,000–$10,00015–25$275–$400
Fractional COO, 30–100 employees$8,000–$15,00020–30$300–$500
Fractional COO, 100+ employees$12,000–$20,00025–40$300–$500
Fractional CHRO$4,000–$12,00010–20$300–$600
Fractional CISO$8,000–$18,00010–20$300–$600
Fractional CMO$4,000–$20,00015–35$250–$575

The CISO line is the one to watch. It is priced like a CHRO on hours but sits higher on retainer, because a company that needs a fractional CISO usually needs one because a customer, an insurer or a regulator asked. That is the same liability pricing we see in cybersecurity consulting rates. The CMO comparison is covered in full in fractional CMO vs full-time CMO.

Fractional vs full-time: the all-in comparison

The headline retainer is not the comparison that matters. The all-in cost of a full-time executive is.

Cost componentFull-time executiveFractional
Base salary$250,000–$400,000Retainer instead
Equity and bonus$50,000–$150,000 a year$0–$30,000 if included
Benefits and employer taxes$40,000–$80,000$0
Recruiting fees$60,000–$100,000$0
Onboarding loss$30,000–$50,000Minimal
Annual total$430,000–$780,000$84,000–$300,000

Fractional Pulse puts the saving at 50% to 80%. CFO Advisors’ Series A worked example gives the same answer from a different direction: a fractional CFO at $325 an hour for 40 hours a month is about $156,000 a year, a monthly retainer $96,000 to $180,000, and a full-time startup CFO $350,000 to $550,000 or more in total compensation.

Warning
The comparison is only fair if the jobs are the same

A fractional CFO for 25 hours a month is not a cheaper version of a full-time CFO. It is a different product: judgement, planning and board work, with the day-to-day finance run by someone else. If you do not have that someone else, a controller or a strong finance manager, the fractional CFO ends up doing their job at four times the rate, and the saving disappears.

When fractional is the wrong buy

You need a signature. Audit sign-off, SOX certification, a regulated entity’s finance director, a bank covenant that names an officer. A fractional executive can prepare all of it and cannot sign most of it.

You are inside 90 days of a major event. An IPO, a sale, a large raise, a restructuring. These consume 60 to 80 hours a week for a quarter. Buy an interim at a day rate, or accelerate the full-time hire, and use the fractional CFO to run the process of hiring them.

The team is too big. A finance function of 15 people, or an engineering team of 20, needs a manager who is there. Fractional executives coach; they do not manage at that scale.

The problem is a person, not a function. If the reason you want a fractional CFO is that the current finance lead is not working out, hire the fractional CFO to assess and, if necessary, replace them. Do not put a fractional executive over a full-time one and hope.

Fractional or full-time? Five questions

Question 1 of 5

How many hours a month does the role genuinely need?

Is there someone to run the day-to-day function?

Is a major event (IPO, sale, large raise) inside the next two quarters?

How many people would this executive manage?

Does anything require a named officer's signature?

What to put in the contract

Every fractional engagement that goes wrong goes wrong the same way: the client assumed they were buying a CFO and the CFO assumed they were selling twenty hours. Write down the hours, the response time, and who does the bookkeeping. Then there is nothing to assume.

Key Takeaways
  • A fractional CFO costs $3,000 to $6,000 a month at seed, $7,000 to $12,000 at Series A, $10,000 to $18,000 at Series B and $15,000 to $25,000 above $20M ARR
  • Hourly rates run $250 to $625 by stage, and $125 to $500 by provider type: marketplace controllers at the bottom, ex-Big Four and banking independents at the top
  • Fractional CTOs cost $5,000 to $22,000 a month at $350 to $630 an hour; fractional CIOs are bought through networks, and the UK contract market shows almost no advertised rates
  • All-in, a full-time executive costs $430,000 to $780,000 a year against $84,000 to $300,000 fractional, a 50% to 80% saving, provided someone else runs the day-to-day
  • Fractional is wrong when you need a signature, are inside 90 days of a major event, or have a team of 15 or more to manage
  • Write the hours, response time, scope boundary and exit into the contract; most failed engagements failed on an assumption

Frequently asked questions

How much does a fractional CFO cost per month?

$3,000 to $25,000, depending on stage and hours. Seed-stage companies buying 10 to 15 hours pay $3,000 to $6,000; Series A companies buying 15 to 25 hours pay $7,000 to $12,000; companies above $20M ARR buying 25 to 40 hours pay $15,000 to $25,000. Companies preparing for an IPO or sale can pay $35,000 a month for 80 hours or more.

What is the hourly rate for a fractional CFO?

$250 to $625 by company stage on Fractional Pulse’s 2026 data, and $125 to $500 by provider type on CFO Advisors’: $125 to $225 from staffing marketplaces (usually a controller), $200 to $350 for a solo former startup CFO, $250 to $450 for a boutique firm, and $350 to $500 for an independent with a Big Four or banking background.

How much does a fractional CIO or CTO cost?

A fractional CTO costs $5,000 to $10,000 a month pre-product, $8,000 to $15,000 post-launch and $12,000 to $22,000 at scale, at $350 to $630 an hour. Fractional CIO rates are rarely advertised; the UK contract market recorded no quoted CIO day rates in the six months to September 2026 and a £625 median for contract CTOs from a small sample.

Is a fractional CFO worth it?

If you have a controller or finance manager running the day-to-day, and what you lack is planning, board reporting and fundraising judgement, yes: you get that judgement for 20% to 50% of a full-time executive’s all-in cost. If you have nobody running the day-to-day, no, because the fractional CFO will end up doing it at a CFO’s rate.

What is the difference between a fractional CFO and a controller?

A controller closes the books, runs payroll and produces accurate historical numbers. A CFO decides what the numbers should be next year and explains them to the board, investors and lenders. Marketplace “fractional CFOs” at $125 to $225 an hour are often controllers; check the background before you buy the title.
